    About this webinar

    Architects and designers are in a unique position to positively impact human health when making design choices that provide opportunities for people to come together. “Designing for Connection in the Third Place” takes a closer look at how design influences opportunities for human interaction, focusing on the role of coffee shops and cafés - often considered third places - to counteract feelings of loneliness and isolation while strengthening social capital. You will leave this session with a deepened understanding of the importance of designing for connection and the key factors to creating inviting and welcoming spaces.

    Lisa K. Waxman, Ph.D. is a Professor Emeritus in the Department of Interior Architecture & Design at Florida State University. A LEED AP with a specialty in Interior Design and Construction (ID+C), Lisa developed the sustainability curriculum for the interiors program at FSU.  She serves on the board of directors for the Council for Interior Design Accreditation (CIDA), the interior design accrediting body for colleges and universities.  Her service to the Interior Design Educators Council (IDEC) includes many roles, including the 2011-2012 president. She was awarded the 2019 Arnold Friedmann Educator of Distinction by IDEC for her contributions to the profession.

    Upon completion, you'll be able to:

    1. Discuss the health and wellbeing benefits of human connection in lessening feelings of loneliness and isolation. 
    2. Explain the benefits - include health and safety - of social capital and connected communities to both individuals and society. 
    3. Explain the value of design in creating opportunities for people to come together and the resulting sense of community and belonging that often results.   
    4. Explain the role of “third places” in the development of place attachment and social capital.
